Город на западе штата Вашингтон. Расположен на берегах бухты Эллиот [Elliott Bay] залива Пьюджет-Саунд [ Puget Sound] и озера Вашингтон [Washington, Lake]. 563,3 тыс. жителей (2000), с г. Такома [ Tacoma] и пригородами - 3,5 млн. человек (первый по величине город штата). Основан в 1852 под названием Элки-Пойнт [Alki Point], вскоре переименован в честь индейского вождя Сиэтла [Seattle I], статус города с 1869. Крупнейший промышленный, торгово-финансовый, научный и культурный центр Тихоокеанского Северо-Запада [ Pacific Northwest]. Важный транспортный узел. Основной региональный порт, входит в пятерку крупнейших портов страны. Два международных аэропорта - городской [ Sea-Tac] и окружной [King County Airport, Boeing Field International]. Авиакосмическая индустрия (предприятия, исследовательский центр и правление компании "Боинг" [ Boeing Company]). Судостроение, радиоэлектроника, деревообрабатывающая промышленность; нефтепереработка; производство алюминия, стали, продуктов питания. Вашингтонский университет [ Washington, University of], Тихоокеанский университет Сиэтла [Seattle Pacific University], Сиэтлский университет [Seattle University], колледжи, публичная библиотека. Симфонический оркестр, оперный театр [Seattle Opera Association]. Среди достопримечательностей: рынок "Пайк-плейс" [ Pike Place Market], башня Спейс-нидл [ Space Needle], Международный квартал [ International District], Художественный музей [ Seattle Art Museum], исторический заповедник "Золотая лихорадка на Клондайке" [ Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park], парки, океанариум [Seattle Aquarium], набережная залива [Waterfront]. В окрестностях гора Рейнир [ Rainier, Mount], горнолыжные курорты в Каскадных горах [ Cascade Range] и горах Олимпик [ Olympic Mountains]. Город практически полностью сгорел в 1889, но был быстро восстановлен. Значительно вырос в период "золотой лихорадки" на Клондайке [ Klondike Gold Rush] (с 1897), когда Сиэтл стали называть "воротами на Клондайк" ["Gateway to the Klondike"], а также в период второй мировой войны, когда его предприятия выполняли крупные военные заказы. В 1909 здесь проходила выставка "Аляска-Юкон-Пасифик" [Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition], в 1962 - Всемирная выставка [ Seattle World's Fair].
